Investigating the Adaptive Potential of Alpine and Sub-Antarctic Island Flora

Abstract :
In 2007 and later in 2008, Hoffmann and colleagues described an idea to use gene expression profiling of species across environmental gradients to identify candidate genes important in adaptive diversification. We initially explored this idea using heterologous microarrays and more recently have used high throughput Illumina sequencing. One of the potential advantages of the latter is that it can also be used to develop molecular DNA markers for tracking seed and pollen dispersal, for investigating the evolutionary significance of hybridisation and for initiating studies on the genetic variation of candidate genes. In this talk, I discuss our progress, challenges faced and new directions for studies involving evolutionary transcriptomics.
